World Book Day 2021
Last Thursday was World Book Day, and to celebrate, the Foundation ran a number of World Book Day competitions. We challenged children in the local community to dress up as their favourite book character, to draw or paint their favourite book character, or to write a review of their favourite book. We had a number of entries, but our favourite was from 5-year-old Noah Harrison, who dressed up as Spider Man. Noah was really pleased with his prize- a National Book token!
Interview: Kinnon North
When did you first become involved with the Foundation?
“In 2011 when Guiseley AFC was promoted into Conference North there was funding available to run projects to promote the football club in the Community. Running projects was something I had never done before so it required a lot of research and learning about how to apply for funding and delivering a successful project. We were very lucky to receive support and advice from Dan Busfield who worked for Positive Futures and Katherine Robertshaw who worked for Aireborough Extended Services- they definitely gave us the confidence to get started.”
What is your role within the Foundation?
“I am a Trustee of the Charity and I am involved in taking the Foundation forward by supporting staff with projects in whatever way I can.”
Has the pandemic had a significant impact on your work with the Foundation?
“The pandemic has raised the profile of the Community Foundation within the local area, among Guiseley AFC Supporters, other agencies and charities. Our staff are primarily trained to deliver sport in its many forms and we asked them to change how they worked to support the most vulnerable in our Community. Alison had just joined us in an admin role and she volunteered to support shielding members of the Community. We couldn’t be prouder of the way they changed the way they worked and delivered services alongside supporting key worker children who were in school.”
What is your favourite part of your role?
“The way the Foundation has grown under the direction of Steve Taylor is way beyond the tiny beginnings we started. The way we have grown our staff from the Academy and in Marcus’ case from attending Holiday Football. Seeing young people coming along and enjoying the activities we provide and finally working for us!”
